3 Essential Potty Training Tips

Contrary to popular belief this need not be such a pain. But potty training is something you cannot afford to take lightly either. It is not entirely impossible to train your dog about where it’s supposed to go do its business – it’s just that it takes some commitment on the owner’s part. On the whole however, it is an essential part of bonding with your new puppy.

To make your job easier, you will find lots of advice available for free as to the best way to go about potty training a pup, or rather, house training it. All of them are tried and tested, but require a good deal of patience and have a long gestation period. Also, you may realize new and unique problems coming your way when you do. A few tips and tricks to deal with these problems:

1) Consider the worst case scenario. Your pup goes on your Persian rug. Yikes! Therefore, take the rug off before your pup has a chance to. Same applies to most other expensive upholstery. Either remove them or get cheap washable covers for the time being. Plain linoleum flooring that is easy to clean is the best option.

2) Pups have very little control over their bowel movements – they go whenever and wherever they feel like it. So you might not want to leave your pup unsupervised for long. Over time, when you establish a pattern for your pups eating and ‘going’ time, the pup will learn how to control his bowel movements.

3) Keep all supplies for cleaning out puppy poop handy and teach everyone in the family how to do the job well. And don’t pick up the pup while it’s doing its business to put him outside, unless you want poop all over your house.
